Panels usually contain some launch icons, a taskbar and a system tray.

fbpanel is quite nice, but has no 'grouping'

tint2 is pretty, but has no 'grouping'. Starts slow when it fails to get the number of desktops from _NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS

avant-window-navigator is pretty, has nice grouping, but its 'popup baloons' are not transient by default and not properly placed when the primary screen is not at 0x0. Does not expand unless COMPOSITE is loaded.

gnome-panel: quite nice, with grouping
